His grandson, Dana (Daniel Petrus) van der Merwe told this story:
A wagon got stuck in the mud, and he tried to push it out all by himself. The result was that he suddenly dropped dead from te strain. Speculatively it could have been a brain or coronary injury that caused his sudden demise at age 36 years of age
